Energy Work: Does energy really flow through your hands?

I just had my first session of energy work performed on me yesterday by my yoga instructor that I really trust and have been practicing under for over a year and a half.  This was my question this morning: How the heck does energy really flow through your hands?

How does that work? I mean, part of me really understands it because I have experienced sort of magnetic-ish sensations when we’ve done energy work that’s been integrated into our yoga sessions (last time we did it, we focused on the heart and the root chakras, and that night I had the most amazing vivid sexual dreams, so much so I’m pretty certain I actually orgasmed while sleeping– I’ve never had anything like that happen before… you can bet your buttons I had a PHENOMENAL DAY after sleep like that!)

So I’m very VERY intrigued,  but it is all SOOO new to me and I want to understand it well, not just a hype new age-ey b.s-“Kool-Aid”-sensationalism  thing.

So I found this:

All around you, and throughout the entire universe, circulates the life energy. It exists not only as an energy field around every living thing, but also circulates through the earth, through the atmosphere around us and throughout nature. The flow of this energy connects everything that exists, and you, as a living being, are taking in this energy at every moment. You are always drawing this life energy into your own energy field, and it is this energy that supports your life, as well as the life of all you seek to heal. In order to practice energy channeling—conducting a greater measure of this energy into your patient for the purposes of performing healing work—you must first learn to bring a greater measure of the energy into your own energy field.

The technique you will use to do this is referred to as Calling in the Energy. You call in the energy by using your power of Visualization.Visualization will be one of your most important tools as an energy healer because it allows you to direct the energy with your effortless intention alone. To call in the energy, using visualization, you will “see”—in your “mind’s eye” or “psychic sight”—this energy begin to flow into you, from all around you, in greater and greater measure. You will also “see” this energy, as it flows into you, move through your body towards your shoulders, down your arms, and collect in your hands, so that you may then channel it into your patient.

And then I found this, which I really like:

Hands can increase the flow of universal life energy into our bodies. Now, while this sound rather ordinary, there is little written documentation on receiving energy through the hands, only giving energy through the hands.

First, we should understand what this energy is. Universal life energy permeates every living thing, including the air, our planet, the atmosphere and all of nature. The flow of this energy connects everything that exists, and is being constantly absorbed by humans at every moment. Now while it is naturally flowing through us, we can increase the inward flow should we be feeling drained, want to heal ourselves or others, or are doing specific energy work for our chakras. This vital energy is what keeps us alive and healthy so the ability to increase it at will is a good thing to know.

Second, let’s discuss the importance of our hands. The hands have been used as emitters of energy since the art of healing began. We know of the existence of the human body’s electromagnetic energy field because high tech equipment, such as a SQUID (Superconducting Quantum Interference Device), EMG, EKG, and EEGs have been used to measure these extremely weak signals. These devices not only detect the presence of such energies, but can show how the laying on of hands (therapeutic touch), and other healing methods such as Reiki (which means Universal Life Energy) and Qi (which stands for Vital Force) can actually alter the subtle energy field of a subject.

Another fascinating aspect to the hands is the power of its magnetism, in comparison to other major body parts. In 1963, researchers at Syracuse University reported the first measurements of the magnetic field of the human heart, just a millionth the strength of the earth’s magnetic field. Ịn 1971, a SQUID was used to measure the magnetic field of the brain which was 100 times weaker then the heart. Finally, the magnetic field between the hands of healers were measured as 1 milligauss. This is less than 1% the strength of Earth’s magnetic field, but 1000 times as strong as the magnetic field produced by the heart!

So that’s cool! That helps me understand a lot more. But I’m still curious of things like, alright, so your hands emit energy/constantly have energy running through them… What about all the other times your just jacking around, doing whatever your doing with your hands? If your not purposeful about it and being mindful while doing something with your hands…does it have the same effect?
